Andy Stochansky
While You Slept

$15.99 plus s/h ($4.00)

This debut album by Ani Difranco's drummer is one of the most requested independent releases we've had at Skids' in some time. Like Difranco, Stochansky is a genre-smashing eclecticist willing to borrow from free jazz, folk, rock, world beat, funk and hip-hop with experimental abandon. Singing in a breathy, strangled cry vaguely suggestive of the likes of Bono or Jeff Buckley, he plays not just drums and assorted percussion instruments but also guitar and saxophone and throws everything from uillean pipes and bouzoukis to accordions and saz into the Eno-like, atmospheric mix. Stochansky's dreamy, mystically tinged lyrics are markedly gentler than Difranco's savage bite, but he shares her affinity for aggressive, urban-forged soundscapes. Challenging listening that's not for the timid.
